Is It Time for Your Well-Woman Visit?

Renaissance Women’s Healthcare is now scheduling convenient appointments.

Has it been a year since your last well-woman visit? Maybe you can’t remember the last time you went to see a doctor for a wellness exam, or maybe you’ve never scheduled a well-woman visit before. Wellness exams for women are important to maintaining good health.

How often should you schedule well-woman visits?

Women should schedule a wellness exam every year. Well-woman visits focus on preventive care for women, and good quality preventive care depends on regular, frequent meetings with healthcare professionals. These exams help you stay healthy and can help detect and prevent diseases.

Write it down in your planner, enter it into your digital calendars, or leave a note on your refrigerator, but be sure to schedule your well-woman visit every year!

When should you start scheduling well-woman visits?

Many women start scheduling well-woman examinations around age 18, but you may choose to start your examinations at a younger age. Generally speaking, it’s a good idea to find a gynecologist between the ages of 13 and 15, and they can help you determine when you should start well-woman visits.

What do you need to do for a well-woman visit?

It’s a good idea to prepare before your examination. The better prepared you are, the more you will get out of your visit. Wellness exams for women consist of three main parts.

  • Your doctor will go over your health history with you. This includes your medical and family health history, sexual activity, diet and eating habits, physical activity, mental health, and other general health information.
  • There’s also a physical examination that may include a clinical breast exam and pelvic exam.
  • Your doctor will then provide counseling and help you establish health goals based on your individual needs.
  • You may or may not have a Pap smear at this appointment. Learn more about a Pap Smear visit here.

Your well-woman exam may also include services such as shots or screenings.

It’s not uncommon to forget questions or things you want to mention to your doctor. You may want to write down any questions you have, document anything unusual that’s been going on with your health, note any changes you’ve made in your lifestyle, etc. before your visit.
