Some people turn to e-cigarettes because they understand the dangers of smoking and believe vaping to be safer. E-cigarettes haven’t been around as long as traditional cigarettes, which means that we have less data on the health effects of vaping. We’re seeing more and more research, however, showing that e-cigarettes aren’t as safe as many people think. A new study shows a connection between e-cigarettes and heart attacks.
Smoking kills
Everyone knows that smoking cigarettes is bad for you. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable illness and death in the United States. It can cause causes several different types of cancer, and is responsible for 87 percent of lung cancer deaths. Smoking causes heart disease, COPD, emphysema, compromises the immune system, and harms nearly every organ of the body.
While people understand the dangers of smoking many believe that using e-cigarettes, or vaping, is a safer, healthier alternative to smoking. Recent research indicates just how harmful vaping can be, however.
A link between e-cigarettes and heart attacks
The study examines the relationship between e-cigarettes and myocardial infarction, or heart attack. According to the study, daily e-cigarette use could increase a person’s risk for heart attack by 42 percent. This research indicates that e-cigarettes are associated with a lower risk of heart attack than traditional cigarettes, but that does not mean that they are safer.
E-cigarettes are still relatively new. They’ve been available in the United States for a decade. It will take more time and research to truly understand the health effects of vaping. This study doesn’t show that e-cigarettes are safer than traditional cigarettes. It shows that you’re twice as likely to suffer a heart attack if you use e-cigarettes.

This study shows a connection between e-cigarettes and heart attacks. There have also been studies suggesting that e-cigarettes could increase the risk for cancer and heart disease, and vaping may expose users to dangerous levels of toxic metals. More research needs to be done to understand how e-cigarettes and vaping affect your health.
Vaping isn’t a safe type of smoking. There isn’t a safe cigarette. E-cigarettes contain nicotine and harmful chemicals just like traditional cigarettes.
