Active Release Techniques (ART)

Active Release Techniques (ART) is a patented system of soft-tissue massage that helps with a variety of conditions resulting from overuse. Here are some example of conditions that respond well to ART:

  • Headaches
  • Back pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Shin splints
  • Shoulder pain
  • Sciatica
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Knee problems
  • Tennis elbow

When parts of the body are overused, whether in sports practice and play or in movements that are part of your job, there can be an accumulation of small injuries called micro-traumas. Together with acute injuries or a simple lack of oxygen to the soft tissue, these micro-traumas can lead to scar tissue which tightens the area and limits movement.

Active Release Techniques are designed to return soft tissues to full motion and flexibility, and to help patients restore full function. Pilot studies, primarily with athletes, have shown significant improvements in comfort and flexibility.
