Ultrasound is a type of imaging that uses high-frequency sound waves to look at organs and structures within your body.
Ultrasounds do not expose you to radiation. Ultrasound imaging provides opportunities for your physician and you to gain information about what is happening inside your body, safely and without discomfort.
What to Expect
When you get your ultrasound, you will be lying on a table. An ultrasound technician will squirt a small amount of ultrasound gel on the area of examination, then use a small device called a “transducer” to move across the area. This transducer will send out sound waves, that bounce off tissues inside your body, which then create images for the radiologist to review. Depending on the type of ultrasound you are receiving you may be asked to remove clothes or jewelry and wear a gown. The examination generally takes just a few minutes.
Prepare for Your Exam
Your doctor may instruct you to avoid certain foods, not eat or drink for a certain amount of time prior to your exam, or have you keep your bladder full for the exam. Please let your physician know of any special considerations prior to your ultrasound.
