Back to School Wellness Visits

It’s summer at last and you are probably enjoying special times with your kids. You’re hanging out in the shade of a big tree or playing at the water park, having picnics by the lake or reading in a hammock. You might be traveling or experiencing tourist attractions near your home, hiking or biking on the greenways, or playing sports and games outdoors. You should also be planning your back to school wellness visits.

Why do you need back to school wellness visits?

A sports physical may be required if your child participates in school sports. Your child’s school will also require up to date vaccinations, and a back to school visit is a great time to make sure that your child is up to date on immunizations.

The back to school wellness exam is also usually your child or teen’s annual check up. This is an opportunity to check blood pressure, heart health, physical and mental development, height and weight, and to answer your questions about your child’s health.

Catching concerns early is the best way to make sure your child remains in good health.

It’s also good for your health. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or need help managing parenting responsibilities, talk with your pediatrician. Your child’s doctor is your partner in parenting, and has the experience to support you.

Isn’t it too early for a back to school check up?

Not at all. As we get closer to back to school time, more parents will begin to make appointments. The schedule will get more crowded.

Your schedule will also get more crowded. Having to shoehorn a medical appointment in when you have to do your back to school shopping, attend open house and other meetings, and deal with all the extra back to school needs can be stressful.

If you need to take some kind of action after your back to school wellness checkup, scheduling that visit now allows you to have some breathing room before school starts. Summer is the perfect time to arrange for your back to school wellness visits.
